Let's set the scene. We were working on a mini golf course - some of the kids were tasked with being "club makers" and others "hole makers." Each took on their job with gusto... and then Parker's hole suddenly looked like one: Walls up, obstacles visible, cup at the end... the room stilled for a moment and then it all shifted from "I need to..." to "We need tos" and "Lets dos..."
This served as such as potent reminder of the important of opening discussions and planning - the tedious part that the kids itch to get through. But we need that coming together, if only to begin the brush strokes toward a shared vision. And therein lies the point, that we so hope to impart to our kids... that invisible barrier between pottering and producing (the blank page and the path to achieving) is surmountable with just a glimmer of a picture or a "hmm what if?" And really this is why we take the time, we slow it down and practice thinking, despite their desire to push right past it. Because, when we stop and think, shift and sway, an internal dance truly becomes a party, when we also get to share an imagination.
